Uma Thapa Magar

With an early career in journalism, Uma Thapa Magar has drawn on her skills as a story teller to relay the centrality of girls’ education, multi-dimensional poverty and the gendered impact of trafficking and violence against women in Nepalgunj Subdistrict in Banke District. Currently serving as a Deputy Mayor in this district, she has remained steadfast in her call for gender-responsive interventions to economic, social, justice and developmental challenges.

As a journalist, Uma was awarded the Women Journalist Award presented by Women Development Office, and the Nepal Press Union Award. As a Deputy Mayor her work on gender-responsive development has been recognized through the the Bageshwori Asal Sashan Club Award for anti-corruption efforts, Nepal Magar Sangh Award for work on the rights of indigenous communities, and the Karitas Nepal Award for her contributions in addressing human trafficking.
