Rights in Practice

In April 2007, Rights & Democracy launched the project “Rights in Practice” funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). This 4-year project supports the efforts of the government and citizens of Afghanistan, particularly that of women, to lay the foundations for an equitable country. The aim of the project is to improve the situation of women’s rights, focusing on family law.

Rural Development Training and Research Institute

The Rural Development Training and Research Institute (RDTRI) functions under the Ministry of Samurdhi and Poverty Alleviation. RDTRI was established in 1974 to train personnel, both government and voluntary, in methods and techniques of rural development, primarily with the aim of meeting the challenges of rural underdevelopment and poverty. The institute over time graduated to the status of the Focal Point for Rural Development in Sri Lanka, as its stands today. Thus, Provision of Training and Consultancy Services and Research are the major occupations of the RDTRI.

SAHKAR SOCIAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION

Sahkar Social Welfare Association (SSWA) is a voluntary organization which dedicates its work to the social uplift of the poor, especially from rural areas. SSWA was founded in 1994 by a group of community workers interested in the improvement of the standard of life of the disadvantaged sections of society, particularly the rural masses, through a variety of socio-economic services. The organization stands registered with Directorate of Social Welfare Government of Sindh Pakistan, under the Voluntary Social Welfare Agencies (Registration and Control) Ordinance 1961 (XLVI of 1961), which deals with local communities and civil societies for their social development and fundamental. The NGO is involved in the socio-economic development activities, on a self-help and participatory basis, particularly in the areas of education, health, HIV/AIDS, against drugs and corruption, against religious extremism, against torture through multidisciplinary approach, peace, equality and social justice, environment, rural & agriculture development, and others with emphasis on child welfare, women development, human rights, etc. The organization seeks to coordinate with the government and other donor agencies for social development in rural and urban areas of Sindh. SSWA is a dynamic platform for different religious and creeds for their better social protection and promotion of their civil rights. Sahkar Social Welfare Association also aims to achieve the objectives from the social business initiative: Eradication of illiteracy: As Pakistan stands among those nations where the literacy rate hardly reaches fifty percent and the low-literacy rate is one of the main hurdles in the development of the country. Besides, the low-literacy is also causing the emergence of ill-taught and misguided youth who consequently become tools in the hands of terrorists. SSWA is strongly working against Religious extremism, ensuring qualitative education: Along with the primary goal to eradicate illiteracy, quality of education also counts. In Pakistan, three types of educational institutes are functioning: Governmental, Private, and Madarsahs (Religious Schools). The governmental schools are administered and funded by the government; the private schools are administered and financed by a group or an individual; and, the madarsahs (religious schools) are working by religious scholars. In spite of claims, the quality of education is still substandard. SSWA targets to uplift the quality of education in Pakistan. Providing employment: The network of school system also serves the purpose of providing employment. SSWA is also running the chapter of United Nations Global Compact in Larkana Sindh besides the social services.

Saibaan Development Organization

Emergency Response Saibaan was pulled into emergency response with donors and local population looking towards organizations which are sincere and can deliver. A number of assessments, mappings and surveys were conducted (20 UCs and 99 villages) by Saibaan for various agencies, which having developed the trust reposed further confidence by tasking Saibaan for distribution of large number of relief items. The emergency response included relief which was immediate (items distribution), short term (infrastructure rehabilitation) and long term (rehabilitation and skill building). All these were complimented by training and kit provisions. The population benefiting from these initiatives included both male and female adults, youth and community as a whole. About a dozen Saibaan staff, 120 volunteers and 54 villages of 11 Union councils benefited from this response and have now people amongst them who have the capacities to address some of the emergency response issues before the external help arrives.

training in sustainable livelihoods to reduce conflict in Cambodian society: 1. Sustainable agricultural cooperative project in PreahNippean commune, Kong pisey district of Kg. Spue province. First year 1995-96, released revolved fund to 60 laonees and operating one cooperative store. 2. Sustainable Rice Bank project in Pormreal commune, Boseth district of Kg. Spue province. First year provided revolving loan to 100 members. 3. Credit system for sustainable community development project in Khvao commune, Somrong district of Takeo province. Just started in February,1996 it served to 600 families/year and also has one small shop. 4. Environmental protection and concept of development project in a whole Somrong district of Takeo province, started from December 1995. We have trained to 300 local leaders on environmental protection, developmentation and community development The role local authorities in collaboration with development agencies and growth 50,000 seedlings for distribution to general families. After they have participated with us, we required them to plant at least ten seedlings around their house.

Sulong CARHRIHL

Sulong CARHRIHL is a nationwide network of individuals, organizations, institutions, and programs who uphold human rights and international humanitarian law as a means to build a just and lasting peace. We believe in active conflict prevention through education, vigilance, engagement and long-term peace and human rights norm-building. As a "third-party" network, we maintain our autonomy. We will campaign for the observance and implementation of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL) by the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the National Democratic Front (NDF) in order to prevent violations. We will help human rights victims seek protection and justice, and ensure that the processes and structures of the CARHRIHL are responsive. Our co-conveners include academic and religious institutions, peace and human rights groups, development NGOs, and various coalitions. The first regional chapter in Bicol, Southern Luzon is led by the Bicol Regional Social Action Centers (BRSACs). Provincial partners and chapters in Mindoro and the Visayas islands, in the Cordilleras and other parts of the country provide the backbone of its national network. A Sulong CARHRIHL Youth Arm mobilizes young people to have a stake in peace and human rights. Sulong CARHRIHL is also a member of the United Nations Civil Society Assembly (UN CSA), the South East Asia Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers (SEACSUCS) and the Generation Peace Network. Institutions and individuals are welcome to join the Sulong CARHRIHL network based on the principle of inclusiveness and criteria of self-acknowledged autonomy and independence.
