Shadia Marhaban was the only female member of the peace talks between the Free Aceh Movement and the Government of Indonesia in Helsinki (2005) that has ended their 30 years of war. She is a co-founder and President of the Aceh Women’s League (LINA) and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Aceh School for Peace and Democracy. Following the successful peace negotiations, through her organization she carried out trainings for 1400 former female combatants, as well as other vulnerable members of the community. Most recently her work focuses on promoting the role of women mediators in Asia through capacity building, networking and advocacy. To this end, she has been working with women in South Thailand, Myanmar, Afghanistan and the Philippines. Ms. Marhaban studied Political Science and is a former Weatherhead Center Fellow, Harvard University.
