Purna Shova Chitrakar

Purna Shova Chitrakar is a Nepalese activist and the founder of the Ban Landmines Campaign. In 1995, there was a growing need to raise awareness of the impact that landmines in Nepal were having on both property and lives. Purna decided that civil society organisations needed to take action, and so she set up the Ban Landmines Campaign on the 4th July 1995.

The campaign creates pressure on the Government of Nepal to ban the production, transfer, use, and stockpiling of landmines to enhance world peace. Through the organisation, Purna runs sessions for those who have been disabled by landmines, and for victims who have lost loved ones. These sessions empower victims and provide training at a grassroots level through different activities and workshops.

The Ban Landmines Campaign works together with local organisations, local authorities, supporters, and media personnel to support those who have been affected, in order to provide them with access to the opportunities they need to fulfill their goals. Purna’s organisation has provided campaign capacity building tools to aid survivors’ lives for over 20 years.
