Quhramaana Kakar

Quhramaana is a leading figure in Afghanistan working for women’s empowerment. She was the Gender Advisor for the Afghanistan Peace and Reconciliation Program, to ensure that women’s interests are prioritised in the work of the High Peace Council and the Joint Secretariat for the High Peace Council.

She has been instrumental in developing gender-responsive policies and organising women’s groups to function as a pressure group to the government. She has been successful in obtaining formal seats for women in the provincial peace councils, while also finding ways and creating avenues for women in the most volatile regions of Kandahar and Helmand, to participate in the peace process.

She has served as the Deputy Chief of Party on a higher education development program and was active in supporting a number of business start-ups for Afghan women, including the development of women-owned and women run IT businesses, and providing job opportunities for women otherwise restricted from availing employment opportunities. She was recently accepted to Cambridge University, where she will pursue a Ph.D. on “The Role of Women in Peace Building in Afghanistan”. Quhramaana aims to engage women and youth in the most insecure parts of the country towards creating peace and rebuilding Afghanistan.
