Sandya Ekneligoda

An activist calling for the truth and justice for families affected by involuntary disappearances during and in the aftermath of the Sri Lankan civil war, Sandya Ekneligoda has engaged her quest for personal justice to unveil systematic concerns about Women, Peace and Security in Sri Lanka. Her advocacy  ranges from issues of women’s financial security, impact of disaster and conflict on families, to impacts of gendered hate speech for those who seek recourse in formal justice institutions.

Sandya’s work includes a mixture of grassroots and regional activism to call to action the visibility of women affected by disappearances in post-conflict situations. She has made submissions to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to strengthen justice and legal recourse for the women impacted by forced disappearances in 2014 and 2016 respectively. Through sustained advocacy, she continues to inspire women’s voices for the rule of law and free speech in public discourse.
